What Is Plasma? What Are Platelets?
These are two common questions. Plasma is the portion of the blood that is liquid. It is made up of proteins and water. This fluid is where white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets move through the bloodstream throughout the body. Thrombocytes, also known as platelets, are the components in the blood that help it to clot when there is damage. They have a unique ability to help encourage growth in tissue. As they move through the body, they are able to encourage healing of damaged cells. This is a natural process, but it can be a slow process in some areas.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? What Are PRP Injections?
The goal of this therapy is to take advantage of the platelet’s ability to heal. To do just that, we use an injection of a person’s platelets into a specific area where we want to encourage healing. This is the process of PRP. It is very safe because these are the patient’s own cells – they are not from a donor. We can target the placement of them through these injections, which allows for the healing cells of the body to be concentrated in one area.
How Does This Happen?
While it may sound complex, the PRP process is rather simplistic from the patient’s point of view. During this therapy, several units of blood are removed form a person’s body. This is done through a simple blood draw. Then, that blood is put through a centrifuge, which spins and helps to separate the various components of the blood from each other. This helps to separate the platelets from the other components.
We then place the platelets into the area that has damage. This could be either from a sustained injury or from disease. When they are placed in this area, the growth factor that is a component of the platelets go to work. They help to encourage the body to heal the specific area of concern, by improving the number of reparative cells in the region.
PRP treatment is very effective because it has very few if any, side effects. PRP therapy is always done by a skilled professional with ample experience. One way we ensure the process is done well is by using ultrasound technology. This allows us to guide the PRP injections into the very specific area we want to improve healing. This can be done with excellent precision, significantly improving the results a person has.
PRP injection treatment offers numerous advantages. It can help to reduce the need for pain medications, including those that often cause addiction. It can help to heal various areas of the body including most soft tissue injuries. This ranges from the rotator cuff tears to the injuries in a tendon in the leg.
